Introduction and Welcome Address

During the welcome address we provided a brief overview of Microsemi's current product portfolio for space flight applications, discussed some recent successes in the industry in which Microsemi's products played pivotal roles, and looked forward to some of the innovations which are fueling growth and development in the space industry.

RT FPGA Product Update

The current Microsemi portfolio of radiation-tolerant FPGAs was reviewed in detail, covering architecture, features, benefits, reliability and qualification. The presentation also discussed recent developments in qualification and processing flows for the latest high-speed signal-processing spaceflight FPGA family—RTG4, integrating Microsemi's fourth-generation flash-based FPGA fabric and high-performance interfaces such as serialization/deserialization (SERDES) on a single chip while maintaining the resistance to radiation-induced configuration upsets in the harshest radiation environments.

RT FPGA Radiation Characterization

This presentation focused on the latest radiation testing methodology and test results for RT FPGAs including RTG4 high-speed radiation-tolerant FPGAs. The RTG4 FPGA family has gone through extensive radiation testing for Total Ionizing Dose (TID) and Single Event Effects (SEE) which include Single Event Latch-up, Single Event Upset, Single Event Transient and Single Event Functional Interrupt for the FPGA fabric and various embedded blocks. The latest updates for in-flight programming were also discussed.

RTG4 Power Hardware Reference Design

A complete hardware reference design using Microsemi's flight proven hardware for powering the latest Microsemi RTG4 FPGA was presented. The design focuses on creating one of the smallest footprint solutions on the space market for a LEO orbit, while maintaining the critical performance requirements for efficiency, accuracy, and transient performance.

Achieving Timing Closure for Maximum Performance in RTG4 FPGAs

In this session, we considered some common timing closure scenarios, and presented effective techniques for optimizing the performance of RTG4 radiation-tolerant FPGAs. Several detailed examples were provided, and guidance on general principles of designing for performance were covered.

Next Generation Power Discretes

Microsemi is a world leader of space discretes, with the largest portfolio of discrete diodes and transistors at over 59 percent of all certified products on the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA)'s QPL/QML lists. By leveraging our Radiation Hardened discrete expertise, we presented an update on our next generation technology, looking at the "New Space" market as well as SWaP improvements for more conventional communication satellites.

Various Microsemi and Partner Presenters

Throughout the day we provided a series of demonstrations of Microsemi radiation-tolerant products, including a telemetry solution using an RTG4 FPGA and an LX7730 Telemetry Manager, a motor control solution using an RTG4 FPGA and an LX7720 Motor Control Manager, a power supply design using an SA50 DC-DC converter, MHP8564 and MHP8565 point of load regulators, and an in-system reprogramming solution for an RTG4 FPGA using a RISC-V microprocessor integrated into a second RTG4 FPGA. Our partners demonstrated data networking using SpaceWire and SpaceFiber protocols, space-rated DDR2 and QDR-II+ memory products operating with RTG4 FPGAs, LEON3FT and LEON4FT microprocessor IP operating in an RTG4 FPGA, and a software tool for analysis of clock-domain crossings in RT ProASIC3 and RTG4 FPGAs.

Space Forum Speaker Biographies

Ken O'Neill
Director of Marketing, Space FPGAs, Microsemi SoC Products Group

Ken O'Neill is Director of Marketing, Space and Aviation with Microsemi, and has supported applications in space, aviation and other high-reliability markets for more than 25 years. O'Neill originally joined Microsemi in June 1990 as an FPGA Product Marketing Engineer, and has held several marketing and field applications engineering positions. Before joining Microsemi, O'Neill served as a Design Engineer with Hewlett-Packard's Computer Peripherals Group. Prior to that, he was a Design Engineer with Racal-Comsec Ltd. O'Neill holds a Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering from the University of Reading, England.

Minh Nguyen
Sr. Marketing Manager, Space and Aviation, Microsemi

Minh Nguyen joined Microsemi in 2006 as an applications engineer. In this role she provided technical support and created application notes to support space customers. In 2010, Nguyen took on a product marketing role supporting space and aviation FPGAs. Nguyen holds a Bachelor's of Science degree in electrical engineering from University of California, Berkeley.

Jih-Jong Wang Ph. D.
Chief Engineer, Technology Development, Microsemi SoC Products Group

Jih-Jong Wang joined Actel, now Microsemi, in 1995 as a senior staff processing engineer and plays a key role in the R&D, manufacturing and radiation testing on every generation of radiation hard/tolerant antifuse- and flash-based FPGA. He has a Ph. D. degree in Materials Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Chris Hart
Director of Marketing, Aerospace Products, Microsemi Discrete Products Group

Chris Hart recently joined Microsemi in 2016 with extensive experience in the Aerospace Market. Prior to joining, Chris was the Space Products Marketing Manager with Texas Instruments, and prior to that was a Senior Design engineer for Honeywell's Aerospace Products Division. He holds a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Systems Engineering from The University of Florida. 

Brian Wilkinson
Senior Director Technical and Strategic Marketing and Applications Discrete Products Group – Power Discrete and Modules

Brian Wilkinson is the strategic applications manager for Microsemi's High-Reliability Group as of 2012. Wilkinson was an FAE supporting products from AMSG, HRG, RFIS and PPG with a special focus on power devices since joining Microsemi in 2007. Prior to that, he worked on missile systems at British Aerospace and was associated with a number of other semiconductor companies. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in semiconductor devices from the University of Bradford, Bradford, England.

Ashley Pollock
Business Development & Marketing Manager, Space Qualified Timing Products, Microsemi Frequency and Timing Division

Ashley Pollock joined the Microsemi Sales Team in 2006 and brings over 15 years' experience supporting various applications in high-reliability markets. Before joining Microsemi, Ashley served as the Domestic & International HiRel Key Accounts Manager with Infineon Technologies, HiRel Group.

Dorian Johnson
Product Marketing Manager, Microsemi Analog Mixed Signal High-Reliability ICs

Dorian Johnson is a Product Marketing Manager for Hi-Reliability ICs with Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Business Unit. She brings over 30 years of experience in product engineering and marketing in the semiconductor industry. Dorian holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Luca Cattaneo
Area Technical Manager, Europe, Microsemi Corporate Sales

Luca Cattaneo joined Actel, now Microsemi, in October 2000 as high level design specialist and promoted in the current role in 2001. Luca brings over 18 years' experience in HW architectures & design, ASIC/FPGA, and standards in several market sectors Consumer, Industrial, Military, Space. Prior to joining, Luca was a senior member in the R&D department of Lucent Technologies & Bell Labs, and prior to that design engineer within R&D at Siemens-Italtel. Luca has several granted patents and holds a Master's of science in electronics engineering from Polytechnic of Milan, Italy.

STAR-Dundee is pleased to be part of this year's Space Forum and will be presenting at all five events in the USA, Europe and India. SpaceFibre is a new on-board network technology which runs over both electrical and fibre-optic cables. SpaceFibre is capable of fulfilling a wide range of spacecraft onboard communications applications because of its inbuilt quality of service (QoS) and fault detection, isolation and recovery (FDIR) capabilities. The innovative QoS mechanism provides concurrent bandwidth reservation, priority and scheduled QoS.
