Overview
Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) Express (NVMe) Technology
The NVM Express (NVMe) specification defines an optimized register interface, command set and feature set designed for Enterprise, Datacenter, and Client systems that use Non-Volatile Memory storage. The goal of NVMe is to unlock the potential of PCI Express (PCIe®)-based Solid-State Drives (SSDs) now and in the future, and standardize the PCIe SSD interface.
Innovative NVMe Portfolio
Microsemi scales the performance storage tier with industry’s first PCIe (NVMe) storage switches (Switchtec™), with the industry’s leading port count and signal integrity, and the Industry’s lowest power consumption (up to 60% more power efficient than other solutions). Microsemi also introduced industry’s first PCIe Gen 3 NVMe Flash Controller (Flashtec™), followed by a 2nd generation introduction of the industry’s fastest PCIe Gen 3 NVMe SSD controllers.
Actively Contributing to NVMe Standards
The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) provides standardized equipment and systems for proper NVMe operating behavior and maintains a strong reputation for independent, vendor-neutral testing with a focus on quality assurance rather than marketing or promotional goals. Microsemi works regularly with UNH-IOL to ensure proper NVMe compatibility, and directly contribute into the NVM Express Work Group as a board member.

Overview
PCIe Technology
PCIe is a widely used bus interconnect interface, mainly used in server platforms. It is increasingly used as a storage interconnect solution as well, with the addition of NVMe storage devices into the PCIe ecosystem. PCIe currently supports up to 8 GT/s of throughput per PCIe Lane, with a roadmap up to 16GT/s. Typical storage implementations utilize x2, x4, x8, and x16 Lane width interconnect configurations from the host root complex, directly to, or through PCIe switches, to endpoint PCIe storage devices.
Industry-leading PCIe products
Microsemi is a leader in PCIe, having introduced multiple industry firsts including:
- Industry's first PCIe Gen 3 SAS/SATA RAID Controller
-
Industry’s first Storage PCIe Switches (Switchtec™), with the industry’s leading port count and signal integrity, and the Industry’s lowest power consumption (up to 60% more power efficient than other solutions)
-
Industry’s first PCIe Gen 3 NVMe Controller (Flashtec™), followed by a 2nd generation introduction of the industry’s fastest PCIe Gen 3 NVMe SSD controllers
- PCIe Redriver with EQNOX™ Adaptive Equalization
- Flash-based FPGAs and SoCs with integrated PCIe end point and root port implementations
Actively Advancing PCIe Standards
The Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) contributes to the advancement of the PCI standard. Microsemi is involved with the advancement of PCIe standards, and ensures our products with PCIe interfaces properly conforms to these standards. At PCI-SIG Compliance Workshop events, products can be tested against the latest PCIe 3.0 test standards, including interoperability testing with 3rd-party platforms and devices. At previous PCI-SIG compliance events, Micorsemi tested Flashtec™, Switchtec™, Tachyon®, and Adaptec® products. The success from these various test events resulted in the listing of several products on the PCI-SIG Integrators List as PCI Express 3.0 compliant.

Overview
Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) Technology
SAS is an interface standard that is used predominantly in data center storage ecosystems today. Currently supporting up to 12 Gb/s of throughput per SAS PHY, SAS has a roadmap up to 24Gb/s. SAS topologies are scalable to support a very large number of devices through expanders, allowing multiple host devices to access many SAS or SATA target devices. Additionally, longer cables are supported, enabling connectivity reaches of 10m or more when using optical cabling.
Industry-leading SAS/SATA Solutions
Microsemi’s industry-leading SAS Expanders offer superior signal integrity (up to 9dB better than the SAS specification), port density (up to 68 ports), and the industry’s lowest power consumption (competitive solutions have 20-40% higher power consumption).
Microsemi SAS/SATA RAID and HBA storage boards provide the lowest power solution, using the industry’s first 28nm storage controller silicon (up to 40% more power efficient than other solutions) and the industry’s first high-port density (up to 24 ports on a single storage controller device).
Active Leader in SAS Technologies
Microsemi is active in the Technical Committee T10, administered by the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS). T10 is responsible for Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) standards and storage interfaces.
Microsemi also belongs to the SCSI Trade Association (STA), which promotes and contributes to the evolution of SCSI. Microsemi is an STA board member, giving us the opportunity to collaborate with other SAS industry leaders, such as Seagate, Amphenol, Western Digital, Toshiba (TAEC), SanDisk, Intel, and Molex. The association’s SAS Plugfest events, hosted at UNH-IOL, allow vendors to test point-to-point connections, related technology standards, and large configurations in order to highlight weaknesses and strengths, to allow for future improvements or the validation of existing methodologies.

Overview
Serial ATA (SATA) Technology
SATA is a widely-deployed client storage interface, currently shipping as SATA 3.x (6 Gb/s data rate). SATA devices are commonly used in SAS topologies as a lower-cost storage medium that does not require the performance, reliability, and redundancy that SAS devices offer. Larger density HDDs providing very low cost per terabit value, such as archive storage, Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR), or eventually Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) offerings, predominantly utilize the SATA interface.
Industry-leading SAS/SATA products
Microsemi SAS/SATA RAID and HBA storage boards provide the lowest power solution, using the industry’s first 28nm storage controller silicon (up to 40% more power efficient than other solutions) and the industry’s first high-port density (up to 24 ports on a single storage controller device). Microsemi’s industry-leading SAS Expanders offer SATA buffering, boosting performance up to 80%.
Active Participant in SATA Interface Standards
Microsemi is active in the Technical Committee T13, administered by the InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS). T13 is responsible for all interface standards relating to the popular AT Attachment (ATA) storage interfaces and standards.
Microsemi is also a board member of the Serial ATA International Organization (SATA-IO), an independent, non-profit organization that provides guidance and support for implementing the SATA specification. Microsemi participates in this organization due to the direct attachment of SATA devices to Microsemi SAS products.
