Microsemi’s OTN Processors Lead in Innovation, Integration, and Power

The Optical Transport Network (OTN) defined in ITU-T G.709 is the default protocol that underpins today’s DWDM packet optical transport networks. Two generations of OTN have already been widely deployed: OTN1.0, which was based on 10G WDM transport; and OTN2.0, which enabled the transition to 100G metro OTN switched networks and is the de facto standard in networks today. OTN has proven to be extremely flexible for accommodating new client signals and line rates. However, the transition to next generation OTN transport has needed to account for greater network densification and flexibility. OTN3.0 responds to this by introducing flexible, “beyond 100G” (B100G) optical transport, coupled with support for new services like 25GE, 50GE, 200GE, 400GE, and Flexible Ethernet. While there will be an enduring market need for OTN2.0, with network traffic destined to undergo another wave of growth, optical transport networks will soon be adding OTN3.0. Built for the cloud and 5G data transport era, DIGI-G5 is Microsemi’s newest addition to the award-winning DIGI franchise. DIGI-G5 enables packet optical transport platforms to triple in capacity while slashing power consumption by 50 percent per port. DIGI-G5 delivers an unprecedented 1.2 terabits per second of combined OTN, and client interfaces supporting 10GE, 25GE, 50GE, 200GE, 400GE, Flexible Ethernet (FlexE), and Flexible OTN (FlexO). DIGI-G5 provides dense “Beyond 100G” (B100G) OTN transport support for cloud-scale 100G+ P-OTPs, DWDM, data center interconnect (DCI), and mobile fronthaul.


Microsemi’s DIGI-G4 OTN processor supports the transition to 400G line cards in OTN switched metro networks. At 50 percent less power per port than previous generation OTN processors, the DIGI-G4 addresses the needs of an SDN-ready encrypted transport infrastructure and delivers the capacity, security, and flexibility required for 400G line cards in packet optical transport platforms (P-OTP), ROADM/WDM, and optimized data center interconnect platforms.


Microsemi’s latest multi-rate Ethernet/OTN framer for routers extends OTN to the router, enabling a single management layer between optical transport and routing networks, resulting in lower operating costs and improved service availability for network operators. META-240G provides ultra-low-latency OTN encryption for secure cloud connectivity, and it consumes 50 percent less power per port than the previous generation, enabling router line card capacities of 1 Tbps and higher.
